I had been down Cub Lake Road many times since the Fern Lake Fire last summer, but had not driven down to the Fern Lake Trailhead. The road had been closed for most of the summer.

We took a ride down there to see what it looked like and to see how smelly it was. I was so surprised when I saw this picnic area right near the shuttle stop and bathrooms by the Fern Lake Trailhead. The grass was still very charred and there was a definite fiery smell in the air. I had no idea that the fire had come so close to the road.

I wonder if we’ll be able to hike Cub Lake or Fern lake this summer.  Maybe with some new growth, the fiery smell will dissipate and we can enjoy one of our favorite hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park once again.
